June 2001- The Bahooka Lounge in Rosemead, Ca. is to this date my favorite tiki bar in the LA area. It has a slight Lack of Tiki's but makes up entirely for it with an overindulgence of Nautical Décor.
The place was started up some 30 years ago and has only relocated once in that time. Started by Uncle Jack (aka Action Jackson) and now in the hands of his son, Bahooka is a bit of a tiki landmark.
But the best part of the Bahooka comes in the friendly service. The story here is that most of the employees have worked here for some 20 years because they enjoy it so much. Talk to them, it's fun.
When I visited the Bahooka one late afternoon, I was surprised to find general manager, Pat"Raindog" (from Tom Waits) tending bar. We had great conversation and story swappings. And I definitely enjoyed Him feeding carrots to the 26 year old Pacu Pihrana in one of the dozens of fish tanks. If you go anywhere in LA for Tiki make sure it is the Bahooka.
